This year's Walled City Marathon was officially launched this week with new sponsorship opportunites announced for one of the biggest and most popular international events in the local sporting calendar which will take place on Sunday, 2nd June 2019.
Athletes from Ireland, the UK, Europe and further afield arrive in Derry/Londonderry each year to compete over a stunning 26.2-mile course that takes in the sights and sounds of the city.
The challenging route incorporates the banks of the River Foyle and its famous bridges before returning to the Walled City for a spectacular finish in the historic Guildhall Square.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, who officially launched this year's event, said: "The Walled City Marathon has gone from strength to strength since it was established as part of Derry's celebrations as the inaugural UK City of Culture 2013.
"It has deservedly developed a reputation as one of the best organised races to take part in, attracting around 1,500 competitors not just from Ireland and the UK but across the world. We look forward to welcoming both local and visiting athletes alike again on 2nd June for what will undoubtedly be another very memorable day for everyone involved."
Scott Galbraith, Event Director, said the organisers were delighted to be launching Walled City Marathon 2019 with exciting opportunities for new sponsors to come on board this year.
Pointing out that the internationally renowned Marathon also benefits a number of local community-based charities, he continued: "There are excellent new sponsorship opportunities available this year for both a headline sponsor and mile markers to help us deliver yet another first-class sporting event."
"There is always a great carnival atmostphere and camaraderie at the Marathon which continues to attract runners from all over Ireland, the UK, Europe and indeed overseas, showcasing our historic Walled City on the international stage."
Project Africa's Dan Tanui set a new course record of 2:19:44 last year when he won the popular event for the second year in a row. Heather Noone from County Mayo and living in London, won the women's race, running her first marathon in three hours and five minutes.
The Walled City Marathon takes place on Sunday, 2nd June 2019, starting from Everglades Hotel on Victoria Road at 8.30am. Entriers are limited to 1500 places and runners are encouraged to register as soon as possible.
